During the Jurassic Period, around 150 million years ago, the Arctic Ocean extended a long arm called the Sundance Sea down through North America into present-day Utah. 🦕
As the continent began to rise (prior to the formation of the Rocky Mountains), the sea gradually receded northward. These red sandstone layers are composed of silts and sands deposited along the shore of the Sundance Sea as it retreated back to the Arctic Ocean.
