Quantum computing poses a significant threat to blockchain security by potentially undermining cryptographic algorithms. Blockchain relies on cryptographic methods like elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) and SHA-256 for securing transactions and wallets. Quantum computers, using algorithms like Shor's, could efficiently break ECC, compromising private keys and enabling unauthorized access or transaction forgery. While SHA-256 remains relatively resistant, quantum advancements may still weaken its security. This could disrupt blockchain's integrity, leading to double-spending or data tampering. To counter this, researchers are exploring quantum-resistant algorithms, such as lattice-based cryptography, to secure blockchains. Transitioning to these solutions is urgent, as quantum computing advancements could outpace blockchain's cryptographic upgrades, threatening decentralized systems' trust and reliability.
