I realized a few years ago that there was a term for the inability (or lack of tendency) to think in images. I noticed this difference in myself from the average thinker when I tried to meditate for the first time. “Visualize yourself sitting on a beach, an orange and pink sky ripening into a deep purple-blue as the sun sets…” whole time I’m just sitting here looking at a mental list: -beach -sand -water -sunset -sea breeze in hair -etc etc etc It’s like knowing that I’m thinking of a sunset beach scene instead of actually seeing it. The word for that is Aphantasia, and Is really close to “aphasia” which is the brain’s inability to comprehend/use language. Knowing this makes me love my brain a little bit more because she talks to herself so uniquely, but didn’t miss out on her ability to communicate externally. It makes my internal world feel all the more exclusive, how cute! 😊
