In Kafka's The Metamorphosis, the most easily overlooked symbols are the “apple” (the rotting apple lodged in Gregor’s back, symbolizing family rejection and guilt) and the “door” (the three doors of Gregor’s room, implying isolation and surveillance). These still-life images, rather than plot-driven, form a secondary narrative of oppression and decay that runs parallel to the surface story of insect transformation, intensifying existential absurdity.
