🔐 If Bybit Had Used Zama’s FHE Technology, the $1.5B Hack Might Never Have Happened
You probably still remember the Bybit hack on February 21, 2025 — one of the largest crypto thefts in history, with losses estimated at $1.4–1.5 billion, mainly in Ethereum (around 401,000 ETH).
The incident shook the entire crypto market, triggered massive user withdrawals, and caused severe reputational damage to Bybit.
The investigation revealed that hackers had infiltrated Safe, the multi-signature wallet provider used by Bybit.
By compromising a Safe developer’s computer, attackers injected malicious code into the wallet’s UI.
When Bybit transferred funds from cold wallets to warm wallets, the hacker manipulated the receiving address and smart contract logic, stealing all assets within minutes.
It wasn’t Bybit’s direct fault — it was a supply chain attack, exploiting a vulnerability in third-party infrastructure.
