Move to the desert and your landscape can be rocks. I enjoyed that about growing up in Tucson

Lawns (by which I mean manicured grassy areas) are good in parks and public gathering spaces. Especially places where people will sit directly on the ground. If you host a lot of public gatherings at home, I support having a lawn, though a patio and garden as that is probably as nice or or nicer for sitting in chairs or on picnic benches. That said, this only goes for one of the two lawns most people have. Front lawns are complete nonsense wasted space.

Your frustration is valid. Lawns are fucked. Hang in there, things will It sounds like you’re on a native plants path and that’s dope. Things will come together over time! For now, are you willing to let what remains of your lawn go to shit?

I killed 2/3 of my front lawn and just left a strip over the septic system to address compaction. Maybe a grass reduction would help? You probably have a native plant society nearby that could help you figure out what to replace it with.

Here in Minneapolis, people are encouraged to replace lawns with native plants, butterfly and bee gardens, and native flowers. These manicured lawns in places like Las Vegas and Phoenix are insane.

You ain’t wrong. I do all my own yard work. Beautiful grass year 1 then weeds started taking over. I don’t want to pay hundreds a month to a company for maintenance.

I feel this more and more every year of living in suburban Utah. I thought zeroscaping was the answer but I've been told to watch out for the heat that rocks reflect back out. Xeriscaping is the middle path for arid regions!
