Active during the 1930s, Floyd was particularly known in Oklahoma, where he was sometimes called the "Robin Hood of the Cookson Hills." Despite his life of crime, he enjoyed a measure of public support because the Great Depression had left many people struggling with debt and unemployment. The idea that he intentionally burned documents to free people from debt is debated by historians. Nevertheless, countless folktales circulated portraying Floyd as helping ordinary people and casting him in a more positive light despite his criminal activities.
