UMass Amherst engineers created an artificial neuron using bacterial nanowires. It operates at ultra-low voltage, just like a real neuron. This enables direct communication with biological cells and saves huge amounts of energy. It could lead to bio-computers and wearables that don't need bulky amplifiers. Future devices might be powered by sweat or harvest electricity from the air.
