In 1985, Parc de la Villette unveiled the world's first permanent 180-degree cinema as part of the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie (Science and Industry Museum). During screenings of its inaugural film featuring Earth views from space, the immersion proved so intense that audiences reported experiencing vertigo. Thirty-nine years later, La Géode underwent reconstruction to amplify this immersive effect - an experience that now begins the moment visitors approach the auditorium through mesmerizing lobby projections.
This park was built on the site of former slaughterhouses. Clever nods to its industrial past remain everywhere - the preserved livestock trading pavilion, abstract bull head sculptures scattered throughout the grounds, bamboo gardens symbolizing renewal... Yet Fainsilber deliberately designed La Géode's sphere as the antithesis to this history. Its flawless mirrored surface reflects (quite literally) a bold new era of scientific progress, creating a futuristic landmark utterly divorced from the site's gritty origins.
