Lalibela takes its name from the king who built it — Gebre Mesqel Lalibela, who ruled the Zagwe Dynasty around 1181–1221 AD. According to Ethiopian tradition, he was born with a swarm of bees surrounding him — a sign of future greatness, as -Lalibela- means (the bees recognise his sovereignty) in the Agaw language.
