Towering Cumulus Towering cumulus clouds are large, tall cumulus clouds that look like big, puffy cotton towers rising high into the sky. They form when warm, moist air rises strongly and keeps lifting well above the base cloud layer, creating vertical growth. You’ll usually see them on warm, unstable days, often before a thunderstorm forms. Height: Can grow from a few thousand feet to 20,000 ft or more.
