since the SEC sued Ripple?
What started as a threat to one company became crypto’s biggest regulatory battle.
The Shock Start (Dec. 2020)
Filed on Jay Clayton’s last days as SEC chair:
- XRP crashed 60% in days
- Coinbase/Bitstamp delisted XRP for U.S. users
- Altcoin holders feared they’d be next
The Long Fight
Ripple refused to settle, arguing no "fair notice" XRP was a security:
- 2021: Community rallied; Ripple fought for hidden SEC emails about Ether’s status
- 2022: Judges forced SEC to hand over emails — showing internal confusion
- 2023: Historic ruling — public XRP sales not securities, institutional sales were; $125M fine ordered
- 2024: SEC appealed
The 2025 End
New pro-crypto SEC leadership withdrew the appeal. Ripple paid the fine and won clear U.S. legal status for XRP.
Ripple survived a regulatory fight that would have broken most companies.
The end of litigation cleared the way for XRP ETFs to launch in late 2025
