yeah self-hosted. (again not a good analogy because self-hosting emails has all sorts of issues). but think about it conceptually: twitter's great, FB is great, instagram is great. it's just that web2 is problematic where they're not just the client (like Gmail) but they're the whole thing (SMTP + server + GMAIL).
