Bitcoin opened pandora's box.
Blockchain unlocked the ability to make a working cryptocurrency. But if you are able to make a digital coin about something, the obvious implication would be that we would end up making a cryptocurrency about anything.
... a coin with a dog as its face
... a coin to pay for a dentist
... a coin to promote a B list rapper
... a coin that better pump or I kill a dog
... a coin that you must buy or I shoot everyone in my school.
In hindsight... it was inevitable.
