The ruins of Great Zimbabwe are among the most impressive stone structures in sub-Saharan Africa — built between the 11th and 15th centuries without mortar, by the ancestors of the Shona people. At its peak it housed up to 18,000 people and controlled the gold trade to the East African coast. Zimbabwe takes its name from these very ruins.
