The most reliable way to get attention online is to leverage negative emotions, which are stickier than good ones. But this runs counter to existing in community, which needs etiquette and decorum from all participants to function. And so therein lies the tension

So this is why most people share their bad stuff? I never have understand why you would do this just to get attention. At the end of the day you are putting your value at the expense of others.

Our brains are conditioned to notice outliers. That’s pretty much the main job. Everything normal? Great carry on. Something weird or unusual? Like a rustling in the bush? Pay attention!!! Great on the savannah, terrible in social media where worst takes get most attention.

Motion for stooges the nice folks can rail at. Community jester role is a way underused marketing lever.

creators are most interesting when well-rounded in being reasonably optimistic and also willing to call a spade a spade when it’s due. uncurbed positivity can ironically be dismal. at worst it sends a message about what the community prioritizes and doesn’t; at best it signals a tendency for risk-avoidance over risk-awareness

would definitely say this is true for social apps in general (unfortunately), particularly IG/threads though as an anecdotal counterpoint I don’t think my casts are particularly negative and I’ve done alright on here

Very true. Another issue is that all attention online is rewarded equally whereas normally this is not the case in a community. We're essentially destroying the fabric of society just to sell more ads.

Negative emotions hook attention. Anger and fear stick because they hit deep instincts. Still, communities lean on civility to hold together; raw noise can overshadow the quiet work of connection.
