Thanks for organizing it. It was great fun and a good turnout for a tropical island in the middle of nowhere. Next year again!

@rileybeans As a researcher I’m conflicted about this https://gizmodo.com/researchers-dump-2-billion-scraped-discord-messages-online-2000605471 you shared in your tg channel There’s a clause in GDPR for using secondary data and public available data for research purposes. I don’t know if this allows for publishing that data. If you ever tweeted between 2010 and 2023 chances are high your tweet has been analysed by some scientist. there’s also a push for researchers to publish their dataset with their paper so that others can run the analysis and check any issues. IMO, the scrapping of the data is an issue if the discord server admin was not aware of it. The proper way to do this is to include in the guidelines that this community takes part in research project XYZ and by joining the server you agree to participate

Student A complaints about micro aggression from student B. Topics that surface are: acts like I don’t know, doesn’t care about my opinion. Both are working professionals (late 20s, early 30s). Student A doesn’t feel like they belong (Native American at a top 10 research universities in the US) and has experienced racism on campus Student B is part of dominant demographic of the program (white female) Student A current mindset is “remove me from the team project & give me extra work” or “suck it up & not try to tell Student B how their actions impact them” What would you do? Course ends in 2 weeks. Student A has another 4 courses to do.

Give me 5 reasons why I should spent effort on grading students papers. I believe the students gave gpt the context (her organization, the papers they read) and got 80% of her work done like that

If you could just program a robot to do it. Or build an overnight oats detector for your fridge. Then add an electronic lock to your bedroom door that’s linked to your door. Overnight oats detected in fridge => door unlocks and you can go to bed.

What can you do with antimatter? Why would you produce it? What are the negative consequences of producing it?

From perplexity: Overnight oats generally offer slightly more health benefits than oats mixed with cold milk on the spot due to better nutrient retention, improved digestibility, and higher resistant starch content. Both are nutritious, but soaking oats overnight gives them a small edge for gut health and satiety. Still not gonna have overnight oats. If I don’t enjoy the food, why should I eat it?

I hate soggy oats. Never doing the overnight stuff. Also never use hot milk. Milk and oats and eat directly before it turns into gluey mixture

For the first time in a long time, possibly first time since starting to teach the course in 2016 (!) I've given full points on the social network paper to one of the HR professionals taking my course (That guy is actually trying to change their career to work in HR) +++ Great organizational challenge +++ Good explanation of how data should be collected +++ Sound metrics +++ Convincing plan to get stakeholders to agree to it
