For all the hype around fourth-generation reactors, there's really only two running in the world: China's commercial high-temperature gas-cooled reactor in Shidaowan HTR-PM plant, and Japan's HTTR research reactor that's been operating for nearly three decades about 90 minutes north of Tokyo in Ibaraki Prefecture.
The U.S.-Japanese ZettaJoule, Inc., which just emerged from stealth mode, brought together the engineers who helped build Japan's reactor. Now they want to build a modern, commercial version of that reactor at an as-yet-unnamed university in Texas.
