In this morning's Heatmap News AM, I'm introducing a new concept: Reactor realism. Reactor realists embrace "the need to keep building more of the same kind of large-scale pressurized water reactors we know how to construct and operate while supporting the development and deployment of new technologies." 1. Trump's reactor realism is making headway as the Energy Department starts talks with developers and utilities on building more AP1000s. But reactor realism isn't limited to new builds. It includes restarts and life extensions. In that sense, the big Diablo Canyon milestone with the plant getting its last state permits, which Paris Ortiz-Wines announced on here yesterday, qualifies. 2. Trump's solar siege, meanwhile, is coming to an end. The Interior Department is once again permitting big solar projects. 3. America's only active rare earths miner, MP Materials, is opening a Texas magnet factory. 4. New data from NYSERDA shows that complying with New York's climate law will cost upstate households nearly twice as much as those in New York City, threatening to widen the already growing rural-urban divide on clean energy. 5. The latest Heatmap Pro poll shows that support for data centers nosedived 26 percentage points just since last fall. PLUS: The Gulf states saw a gas pipeline boom last year. https://heatmap.news/am/trump-nuclear-power
