It was found in a garbage dump in Istanbul in the late 17th century by a paper collector. The collector traded the diamond for three wooden spoons. It is said that the diamond took its name from this spoon maker ! The most widely known story about how the diamond entered the Ottoman treasury is that it was purchased from Napoleon's mother. According to the story, in 1774, a French officer named Pigot purchased the diamond from India and took it home. Some time later, Napoleon's mother purchased the diamond. It remained with Napoleon's mother for a long time, and after Napoleon's exile, she offered it for sale. A man from Tepedelenli Ali Pasha, who was in France at the time, bought the diamond and brought it to him. Tepedelenli Ali Pasha was killed during the reign of Mahmud II for allegedly rebelling against the state. Tepedelenli Ali Pasha's assets were confiscated, thus entering the treasury.
