Gel Batteries: These are sealed batteries where the electrolyte is in gel form instead of liquid. They have high resistance to evaporation, can operate in a wide temperature range, and do not require maintenance of fluid levels. Gel batteries are often used in solar power systems, marine navigation, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) Batteries: Another type of sealed battery where the electrolyte is absorbed in a flexible porous material. They have a high charging rate and can operate in various positions without leaking. AGM batteries are frequently used in UPS systems, electronics, telecommunications, and medical equipment. LiFePO4 Batteries: This is a type of lithium-ion battery where the cathode is made from lithium iron phosphate. They are known for their high resistance to overcharging, high efficiency, and longevity. LiFePO4 batteries are safer compared to other types of lithium-ion batteries and are often used in electric vehicles, solar batteries, and portable devices
Charging and Discharging LiFePO4, AGM, and Gel Batteries Charging: Voltage and Current of Charge: Each type of battery has recommended values for charging voltage and current. It's important to follow these parameters to avoid overcharging or overvoltage, which can damage the battery. Charge Management: Some chargers have built-in charge management features that automatically adjust the voltage and current, helping to prevent overcharging and maintain optimal conditions for the battery. Discharging: Depth of Discharge: To maintain battery longevity, it's important not to allow too deep a discharge. The recommended depth of discharge is usually specified in the battery specifications and typically ranges from 20% to 50% of total capacity. Discharge Control: Some systems include discharge control features that automatically disconnect the load when the battery voltage reaches a certain level. This helps avoid too deep a discharge, which can damage the battery.
Overall, for maximum performance and longevity of batteries, it is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for charging and discharging, and use quality chargers and controllers that match the battery specifications.
Let's Start with Batteries What Types of Batteries Exist? There are many different types of batteries. Here, I will only discuss those types that I personally consider suitable for an autonomous system in an apartment.
