Chilean President-elect José Antonio Kast appointed this Tuesday two former lawyers of dictator Augusto Pinochet as his future ministers of Defense and of Justice and Human Rights. The leader of the far-right Republican Party, who will take office on March 11, has publicly declared his admiration for Pinochet, whose regime murdered and disappeared more than 3,000 opponents between 1973 and 1990.
At a ceremony in Santiago, Kast presented his next cabinet, which includes Fernando Barros, 68, as head of Defense, and Fernando Rabat, 53, as minister of Justice and Human Rights. Both were part of the legal team of the late dictator. Fernando Barros led Pinochet's defense. It was while he was detained in London in 1998 at the request of the Spanish justice system, which was seeking his extradition to try him for crimes against humanity. Rabat represented the general in a case of embezzlement of public funds. Pinochet died in 2006 at the age of 91 without being convicted for any of the charges.
"This cabinet is not born from quotas, nor from calculations, nor from pressures. It is born from a deep conviction and a common vocation: to put Chile first always," stated the president-elect.
