in muslim countries there is a legal concept called * mahr *, i’m not judging whether it’s good or bad, but in iran this law is kind of unfair to men mahr in iran is something a man promises to give to his wife in exchange for marriage, it can be money, gold, a house, or anything with financial value. the woman can demand it whenever she wants, and the man must pay the full amount, there’s no condition or specific timing required, they don’t need to get divorced for her to ask for it, and even if the wife dies, her family can still claim the mahr from her husband. if the man can’t or doesn’t want to pay, he can go to jail, it’s not just the assets he owns at the time of marriage, he can promise way more than he actually has, he wants to show how much he loves her!and if the wife asks for it later and he can’t pay, he ends up in prison. of course, not every woman demands her mahr, but it has become a real problem for marriage, imo, mahr feels like buying a woman, on the other hand, many men give it out of love and from the heart, but later they might lose everything because of this law, especially if the wife also asks for a divorce at the same time. many men go to jail because of mahr, and many men refuse to get married because of unreasonable demands from the bride’s family. a life that should start with love and shared values between two people now feels like a business deal, i believe instead of something material, two people should give each other their bodies and souls.
