Neynar buying Farcaster is honestly one of the strangest acquisitions I’ve seen.
Neynar only existed because Farcaster existed. It was built to support it, grow it, power it, and now it owns it. That alone says a lot.
It feels like Dan and Varun eventually had to face the reality that Farcaster wasn’t becoming the alternative social network they hoped for. The pivot toward social trading looked more like survival than conviction. What they really wanted was a decentralized public square, Reddit meets Twitter, but native to crypto rails.
The traction never fully came, and once Base shifted focus toward its wallet and trading app, that probably sealed it. Losing that support mattered.
Under Neynar, @farcaster will likely turn into a more programmatic social layer, tightly integrated with trading and monetization. Less agora, more infrastructure.
