Up until 1909, the Cambridge maths student at the bottom of the class received a wooden spoon as a prize. Since Hensleigh Wedgwood was the first student to do so in 1824, the analogy for Classics exams was a wooden wedge.

It was a golden age. There's zero entitlement to what should be awaited. The goal was to be outstanding and appreciated, if need be, in no particular sense.
