I'm finding the "positive sum" language around coins really misleading. It's literally the opposite. If the way users make money from their content is when other users buy it, it's literally zero sum, financially. Not everyone can be making money, unless external capital is being injected from a another source (which is losing money).

Not to mention that trading any coin on a DEX is quite literally PVP against the other traders. It’s defined by en equation. Plus there’s a fee to the DEX / client on most interfaces.

I think this misses the bigger picture. if you treat coins purely as a closed system with buyers and sellers, it looks zero sum. but that ignores the fact that attention and discovery are not fixed resources. the “positive sum” comes not from everyone making magic internet money, but from the system enabling value to emerge where there was none before. leads to better discovery, better content, and more people opting in, that is net positive. also remember that money is infinite, and if not injected here, its injected elsewhere.

strong disagree. this is only true if you believe the actual value of the content is $0, which I strongly believe is not the case (trillions of dollars of value has been created from that content). if you believe the content has value, then it's straightforward to design a system that's positive sum because there's an infite supply of creativity.

So Merkel raised over $100M, so there's definitely external capital being injected. The Coinbase play is harder for me to understand because they have a fiduciary duty to the public shareholders. So if they are injecting capital for rewards, they are definitely expecting to make more on fees meaning it's actually negative sum for users, right?

Is there not massive amounts of capital injected into social platforms now? No reason there can’t be an ad model built on top where the ads come thru users vs the platform

Of course it is! Ever since the rally cry, mantra days of WAGMI the people who understand its short term gains dressed up as long term sustainability are the ones poised to make the most of this wave. The optimism is spiked to indoctrinate those who are new to the space, which happens every time there's a bull run. The blissfully ignorant and financially uneducated will get rekt in the process and the cycle will repeat itself under a new banner. Rinse, wash, repeat.

Yes, unless they represent value being generated outside of the coin itself. Many app tokens creating products or service of value can genuinely represent real external value that can grow over time in a non-ponzi way. The governance tokens of DeFi protocols that provide real financial services are just one example.

seeing how remnant user holdings get rounded down to zero, forgotten to atrophy and rot into worthless dust clogging the bottom of all our wallets, i might even argue it's actually negative sum

I and many others been saying this since day 1 when it launched you don’t take into account bots and snipers who also contribute and loosing some but likely making more buying a coin feels like a selfish tip, you buy $5 of it and creator only gets $0.05 lol and you can sell what you bought at any time or for a fat profit if there are more people buying after you
