In Joris-Karl Huysmans' novel À Rebours Des Esseintes is an aristocrat who, disgusted with the vulgarity of the real world, retreats into a house of pure artifice, surrounding himself with exotic perfumes, rare books, and artificial flowers.
He tries to live entirely within his own mind and his curated surroundings. Eventually, his health fails, and his doctor tells him he must return to the world of ordinary people and physical reality or die.
We've built ourselves a digital "Against Nature" palace. It's beautiful, engaging, and incredibly comfortable.
But the air is getting thin.
The physical world is calling us back.
