My thesis of how we got here is shifting to the idea that the reaction to the world wars is ending because it reached a tipping point where preventing totalitarianism eventually led to totalitarianism. 

The reaction was to have a bias towards being open, but being open to everything eventually led to being open to nothing. 

All of this rests upon the original problem of the death of God, which in its modern formulation are questions like what is Good, Truth, Beauty, and Morality.
