The United States’ approach to the Middle East is shaped by its own strategic interests, not by control from any foreign government. While the U.S. and Israel maintain a close alliance, American foreign policy is ultimately driven by its institutions, elected leaders, and national priorities. Iran, meanwhile, has faced decades of internal and regional instability. From the Iran–Iraq War in the 1980s to ongoing proxy conflicts across the region, the country’s leadership has often pursued policies that heighten tensions at home and abroad. Inside Iran, waves of protests; including the 2009 Green Movement and the 2022 demonstrations sparked by Mahsa Amini’s death, have been met with significant state violence, including the killing of protesters and harsh crackdowns on dissent. These dynamics shape how the U.S. engages with Iran and the broader region. Israel remains a key partner, Iran remains a major source of regional friction, and the U.S. makes its own decisions based on its broader security and diplomatic goals.
