@jesse.base.eth
have seen some convo on it, so let’s talk ads in the @baseapp.base.eth.
TL;DR builder distribution is the space’s biggest problem, we know ads can help solve this, but we also know that in web2 ads are ick. we’re leaning in to make them work better for everyone using the superpowers of onchain as platform. it’s still early, but we’re seeing really strong signs and we want your feedback to make it better.

first, some context. over the last two years building base, the #1 challenge we’ve heard from builders is that it's too hard to reach customers. we think about the base economy as a flywheel: more builders -> more great apps -> more people -> more builders. and what we’ve heard again and again is that the flywheel is broken: the builders and apps can’t find the people!
so this year, we took that head on and built the @baseapp.base.eth. it’s still early, but it’s showing very promising signs: we’re seeing people organically discover, use, and back the best apps on base. this is really good! and while it’s still early, with 800k+ people on the waitlist, we have line of sight to being able to scale this organic flywheel meaningfully.
at the same time, we’ve known from the beginning that organic discovery is only one path: the entire internet thus far has grown in a huge way through paid discovery: these are the ads you see in every feed, app store, mobile game, delivery apps and more. they are a major way that apps and businesses - from your favorite restaurant to a new clothing brand - scale their business in a repeatable way. and for many of us, they’ve also helped us find things we didn’t know we needed - that piece of clothing we love or that random kitchen gadget we now love. they also level playing the field for builders - if you have a great product that you know people love, but don’t “optimize for virality”, ads can help you reach those customers in a scalable way.
so for businesses and apps and builders and people, ads are good! but for many of us, ads still feel bad. there are a few reasons why: they often lead us to deadends or roundabout user experiences, they misuse our data, and perhaps most importantly, users are cut out of the economic transaction. this is the ultimate paradox: we know ads play a critical role, but we are so frustrated with the status quo, it’s hard to accept them as they are.
as we started working on solving the flywheel problem, we realized that ads needed to be one path in the larger solution to reach customers. but we also felt that ick. and knew that to do ads, we needed to do them right. so we went out and found the smartest people in the world working on this problem and had them join the base team. this is @antonio and the spindl team, who joined us earlier this year.
and since they joined, we’ve been working on building ads that work for everyone. something that can solve the builder need AND be something that we feel proud of and everyday people actually want to tap. we’re doing this in three ways:
1. By making the UX 10x better - we’re doing this with mini apps, so every ad is one tap away from doing the thing you want. Tap and go. Check it out in @morpho below.
2. By using onchain to make ads more effective (while respecting your privacy) - we’re using only onchain data to help businesses reach the customers they care about, then iterating on new, private mechanisms for letting you share more data in a fully private way.
3. By building a new economic model that cuts you in, only possible onchain - this is still early, but with onchain ads, we can directly attribute the value flow and then share that value between the publisher showing the ad, the person interacting with the ad, and the advertiser. our mvp doesn’t have these mechanisms yet, but we see so much opportunity here.
the good news is that we’re already starting to see really good data on this: ads in the feed are seeing higher clickthrough AND like rates than organic content. BUT we still have a lot more work to do. as you interact with these ads in the beta, we’d love your feedback on what’s working and what’s not. and if you’re building something and want to reach more people, reach out to @antonio and see if we can help you do that. still day one.
