Saying that Europe has reached an apocalyptic state is, as you say, definitely over the top. I believe the reason so many people see it that way is that negative news stories tend to spread much faster and reach far more people. Influential figures like Elon Musk amplify this perception by constantly posting this kind of news. Yes, Europe has plenty of problems, and yes, some of them are bureaucratic or migration-related, but in my opinion the biggest threat to the EU comes from within. Legislation like the GDPR and the proposed “chat control” measures represent the real danger to privacy and free speech: being monitored without consent, and no longer being able to express opinions freely without fear of being judged, labelled, or even prosecuted. That is a very dangerous path. I’m a strong advocate for credible anonymity and true free speech platforms that verify EU citizenship without sacrificing privacy or free expression. As a German citizen, I am deeply concerned about the proposed EU regulation on “chat control” and client-side scanning! This discussion has been ongoing for 3 years! Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Romania, and Hungary have already given in. If Germany folds, it would essentially allow private messages to be scanned on users devices. WITHOUT any concrete suspicion. Signal has already announced that it would leave Germany if chat control is implemented. Germany’s position is considered pivotal. And I truly hope that Germany make the right decision on October 14th! Implementing client-side scanning would not only endanger citizens privacy and undermine trust in digital communications. BUT ALSO pose a major threat to our democracy.
