Echolalia is the repetition of words, phrases, or sounds heard either immediately (called immediate echolalia) or after a delay (known as delayed echolalia).
It’s a natural part of speech development for all children many toddlers repeat things they hear as they learn how to talk.
But in autistic individuals, especially those who are minimally verbal, non-speaking, or developing speech differently, echolalia can persist longer and play a much more functional role.
