Vitalik Buterin said that with ZK-EVMs now achieving production-level performance in alpha and PeerDAS already live on Ethereum mainnet, the network is progressing toward a model that combines high bandwidth, strong consensus, and decentralization — effectively overcoming the blockchain trilemma. He expects gas limits outside of ZK-EVMs to rise further and anticipates the appearance of ZK-EVM-based nodes starting in 2026. According to him, ZK-EVMs could become the main method for block validation between 2027 and 2030, while fully distributed block building remains a longer-term objective aimed at reducing centralization risks and improving geographic fairness.
