One of West Africa's oldest and most continuously inhabited cities, Kano has been a major centre of commerce and Islamic scholarship since at least the 10th century. Its ancient mud-brick walls, the Emir's Palace, and the centuries-old Kurmi Market make it a living museum of Hausa-Fulani civilisation.
