One day, photographer Inge Morath arrived to photograph cartoonist Saul Steinberg. When she rang the doorbell, Saul emerged wearing a paper bag on his head, on which he had drawn a self-portrait. Thus began one of the most interesting and captivating artistic collaborations between photographer and cartoonist in history. At first glance, these images appear playfully performative, joyful, and imbued with childish humor and imagination. However, upon closer examination and collective reflection, the photographs gradually begin to act as enigmatic metaphors for the eerie gaiety and forced innocence of postwar America in the 1950s.
