Such a piece of shit.
Public golf means so much to so many people. Working class people, veterans, teachers, people who know that the members of the private clubs they covet look down on them, and are left to deal with conflicting disdain towards them and also the shame of wanting nothing more than to be one of them.
That includes me, at 14, living in a town with three "world class" golf courses, idyllically situated behind iron gates and 10 foot fences to keep the likes of me far away. Whose parents had very little money and nothing to say when I told them I wanted to play golf like my friends.
Luckily there was a muni in the town next door that would charge us 5 bucks to play after 3PM in the summer. Sometimes they let us play as a 5-some because, well, there were 5 of us and they were kind people. Or sometimes I went by myself, dropped off warily by my mom after work, and got paired with 3 locals in their fifties with pull carts, who walked slow, smoked Marlboro Reds and drank beer and cursed like the working class men they were, and treated me like adult for maybe the first time. I can't convey how much I learned there on those summer afternoons in the fading light on that "run down" course that I called my own.
I don't know East Potomac Golf Links, but I know places like it because at one time they were everything to me, and the fucking cruelty of dumping the remains of the east wing of the most magnificent of public places is so cruel it is shocking. Once more with this shit stain of man as our president I am left asking, what have we become, how much further can we fall?
