Beauty Standards Are a Moving Target — and Women Always Pay the Price Every decade, beauty trends shift — from the hourglass of the 1950s to the heroin chic of the 90s, to today’s filtered Instagram perfection. The target keeps moving, and it’s women who are constantly running to catch up. The cosmetic, fashion, and wellness industries thrive on this insecurity cycle. One moment, thick eyebrows are “in,” and the next, it’s pencil-thin arches again. Trends are packaged as empowerment, but in reality, they’re often about monetizing self-doubt. Even body positivity, a movement meant to liberate, has been co-opted into yet another marketing strategy. This isn’t about banning makeup or fashion — self-expression can be joyful. The issue is when societal worth is tied to appearance, women end up spending disproportionate time, money, and emotional energy maintaining a certain “look.”
