While there is evidence of tanning as far back as 400,000 years ago, the first confirmed tool for embroidering leather dates back to the Stone Age, 5000 BC. At this time, leather was used for shelter, clothing and shoes. In Armenia, the oldest known leather shoe has been discovered, dating back to 3500 BC.
