Today I watched a TEDx talk titled “Why Democracy Needs Data Privacy” by Carissa Véliz. It changed my perspective on data privacy. I used to not care about it. I feel hopeless because our data and habits are constantly recorded by big companies. Carissa explained that our data is like a toxic substance. it can be dangerous. So we should treat it as such. Our government knows our relationships, bank accounts, purchasing power, and almost all of our private information. This is dangerous, because the temptation for governments to abuse their power is high. We need privacy for journalism. We need privacy for criticism. Even for the freedom of speech itself. There’s a powerful quote: “There’s freedom of speech, but I cannot guarantee you’ll have freedom after that speech.” Zero-knowledge and fully homomorphic encryptio. Like those developed by Zama or idOS are great steps toward securing our privacy. They might be the first step to regaining control and protecting democracy itself.
