🔥 THE DAO HACK (2016) — THE BIGGEST AND MOST DRAMATIC ETH RECOVERY IN HISTORY
Real story
🌱 THE DREAM THAT STARTED IT ALL
At the beginning of 2016, a group of developers created The DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), a decentralized investment fund built on Ethereum.
It was the first massive experiment of “on-chain governance.”
The excitement was so big that, in just a few weeks, The DAO raised:
👉 12.7 million ETH
That is, more than 150 million dollars, becoming the largest crowdfunding in history up to that moment.
No one imagined what was about to happen.
💥 THE HACK
On June 17, 2016, an attacker exploited a vulnerability known as a reentrancy bug in The DAO smart contract.
In simple terms:
The attacker managed to “call” a function repeatedly that sent ETH before the contract updated its balance.
Within hours, the attacker diverted approximately:
👉 3.6 million ETH
(CURRENT VALUE: billions of dollars)
The ecosystem went into total panic.
Ethereum was young, its reputation was at stake, and its future literally hung by a thread.
🕵️♂️ THE TWIST: THE “FEATURE” THAT SAVED EVERYTHING
What the hacker didn’t expect was this:
The DAO’s design had a “timelock”:
Those stolen ETH could not be withdrawn for 27 days.
In other words, the funds were stolen but temporarily frozen.
A “locked chest,” but about to open…
The community had less than a month to decide:
1. Let the hacker keep millions of ETH?
2. Attempt a technical operation to reverse the damage?
⚔️ THE BIGGEST DEBATE IN ETH HISTORY
For weeks, the community debated intensely:
The philosophy of blockchains
Immutability
Trust in code
Responsibility to investors
Finally, the most controversial proposal emerged:
👉 Make a “hard fork” to return the funds to the affected users.
If approved, Ethereum would alter its own history to reverse the hack.
If rejected, the hacker would take the 3.6M ETH.
The vote ended in favor of the fork.
🔧 THE HARD FORK THAT “RETURNED” THE STOLEN ETHER
On July 20, 2016, the historic hard fork was executed at block 1,920,000.
What did it actually do?
Very simple and very powerful:
✔️ Moved all the stolen ETH from the hacker’s wallet
✔️ To a special address
✔️ That allowed all affected users to claim their ETH back
It was the largest cryptoasset recovery in Ethereum’s history.
Tens of thousands of users recovered their funds.
⚡ BUT THERE WAS AN EPIC CONSEQUENCE
Part of the community rejected the fork, arguing that the blockchain “should not change the past.”
They continued using the original chain, without reversing the hack.
Thus, two chains were born:
Ethereum (ETH) → the chain that returned the money
Ethereum Classic (ETC) → the chain where the hacker kept the loot
Both exist to this day.
🏁 FINAL RESULT
The community achieved the impossible:
✔️ Recovered 3.6 million ETH
✔️ Prevented early destruction of the project
✔️ Established a global precedent in blockchain governance
✔️ Saved what today is the second-largest crypto ecosystem on the planet
To this day, this remains the largest cryptoasset recovery ever executed on a layer-1, both in economic value and historical impact.
