Because the internet enables everyone to know much more about the world at any given moment, including what’s happening in their own societies relative to others, maybe we now can somehow better head off the kind of societal implosions experienced in the past? Like, maybe a WW1 wouldn’t have happened if people were online back then and were like, ‘Hey, this nationalism thing really doesn’t have much to do with me fighting and dying over in Flanders.’ Or maybe it’s the opposite — we instead are prone to rush to judgment/act more impulsively and therefore are more likely to end up dying in the Flanders trenches. Or maybe it’s all a computer simulation and we have no free will 🤷

I’m currently audio-reading this book, and what I like about it is that it’s more concrete an argument than similar attempts to explain societal breakdown, such as, say, The Fourth Turning. Basically, the book’s argument goes something like this: if you get too many elites vying for limited resources, then the elites end up fighting each other over resources that become even scarcer, while everyone else becomes really, really poor in the process. The historical examples used in the book are numerous and explained well. Helps make sense of America’s perpetual tumult.

The Crypto Anarchist Manifesto should be required reading in the Palantir age. It should give you hope. Not because it’s edgy and therefore cool. But because of what it means amid a great threat posed by centralized systems — there is hope through technology. The centralized forces push hard, but then suddenly emerges Bitcoin. I boned up on this rather macabre topic given the genocidal violence currently afflicting the Mideast. And one thing I found interesting was the uniqueness of Soviet Communism in world history. Hitler, as one historian described it, was like a Genghis Khan motivated by a modern tribal ideology and armed with modern killing machines. But the meticulous degree to which the Soviets tried to reprogram human nature seemed novel. Like a mass psychological torture campaign to break down society totally and utterly. Indeed, getting society to turn on itself at the most individual level — friend against friend, family member against family member — for achieving a collective good was novel. Victims couldn’t be expelled — they had to be broken down and remade, all of them, like a new societal factory setting. That’s not to say one of these evil ideologies was worse or better — all were monstrous. It’s about the novelty of a methodical attempt, driven by utopian ideals, to change what makes humans tick

I remember initially feeling like it was my fault when Momma Elon and Poppa Donald split up. I would scream into my pillow, isolate myself in my room, listen to ABBA and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird on repeat, over and over, sometimes for hours. What it really took was time. It wasn’t me, I eventually realized, thanks to the inexorable and healing elapse of time
