Han van Meegeren forged Vermeers so persuasive that the foremost Vermeer expert authenticated them and the market absorbed them as a lost early period.
Then he sold one to Göring. Van Meegeren was arrested after the war for handing a national treasure to the Nazis, his only defense was the truth: it was fake, he'd made it. Nobody believed him. To prove it, he had to paint another in front of judges and police during the trial.
