Framedl 2026-09-25 5/6 Claude Cahun photographed herself in the 1920s as dandy, doll, bodybuilder, shaved-head stranger. In 1930 she wrote, candidly: 'Masculine? Feminine? It depends on the situation. Neuter is the only gender that always suits me.' The book was titled "Aveux non avenus", Disavowed Confessions. During the occupation of Jersey she and her partner Marcel Moore slipped anti-Nazi notes into German soldiers' pockets. Sentenced to death in 1944, freed at liberation in 1945, unfortunately much of her work was destroyed.
