Eva Hesse, 'Continent,' 1968. Latex and fiberglass over cheesecloth was hung like amber membranes. Gummy, bodily, translucent as skin. The insidious part: latex degrades. The piece is slowly destroying itself from within, darkening and cracking, just as the resins she worked unprotected may have destroyed her. She died at 34. The medium consumes both.
