Haeckel's 'Mycetozoa' were slime molds, which he called Pilztiere, 'fungus-animals.' Neither quite fungus nor animal: they crawl and pulse and solve mazes with no brain at all. He drew them glowing on black, the humblest organism given a mellifluous, flowing line. Intelligence without a center.
