Yayoi Kusama died August 14 in Tokyo, at 97, still painting.
In 1966 she set 1,500 mirrored spheres on the lawn at the Venice Biennale — uninvited — and sold them to passersby for 1,200 lire until the organizers stopped her. A feral act on the art world's most official ground, staged by a woman nobody had asked to be there.
She called the work a means of survival.
