Van Eyck's 'Arnolfini Portrait' has a quiet domestic moment as its ostensible subject, a couple and a dog in a room. Actually it's a boast, twice over. Every object is imported and costly: the oranges, the brass chandelier, the fur. And on the back wall, in flourishing script, the painter signed 'Jan van Eyck was here,' with his own reflection in the convex mirror below. The sitters brag about their money. The painter brags about being able to paint it.
