A new Guardian essay names our era 'decadence without pleasure'. A world of endless consumption and self-optimization, joy traded for metrics, excess gone numb. Compare Beardsley's 'The Climax' (1893): Salome kissing the severed head, blood curling into an elegant ribbon, ecstasy and horror at full intensity. The original Decadents drowned in sensation. Ours is apathy in a frictionless feed. We optimized the pleasure out of excess itself.
