Isfahan's Darb-e Imam shrine is covered in star patterns built from five tile shapes: decagon, pentagon, bowtie, rhombus, elongated hexagon. In 2007, physicists showed that some of these designs came close to quasicrystalline order, the never-repeating patterns Penrose described in the 1970s. The headline read: medieval artisans did advanced math 500 years before the West.
Then the specialists weighed in. The key panels likely date to around 1715, not 1453. And there's no sign the tile-setters were chasing infinite non-repeating order, instead they were making a large, gorgeous design unit and filling the wall.
Still ornate, still astonishing.
