Damien Hirst suspended a tiger shark in resin and formaldehyde in 1991. Death made permanent, sealed, eternal. Except it wasn't: the shark rotted, and in 2006 the whole animal was swapped for a fresh one. Which cracks open a veracity problem, is it still the same artwork? Was the promise of permanence ever true, or was the seal always a lie? Nothing stays fixed, no matter what you preserve it in.
